Irkutsk, standing on the Angara river, grew out of the winter quarters established in 1661.
During the 18th and the 19th centuries the city stood on trade routes to China, Mongolia, and Alaska.
In the years of Russian Civil War Irkutsk was the residence of Admiral Kolchak, the Supreme Ruler of Russia.

Irkutsk-Passazhirsky railway station is located on the left bank of the Angara river, facing the city centre. Surnov and Angarskaya streets, going along the right bank of the Angara, connect Irkutsk river terminal with Irkutsk hotels downtown. Znamensky Convent and the monument to Admiral Kolchak are located downtown halfway to Nizhnyaya embankment from the river terminal.
Irkutsk bus terminal.
Irkutsk bus terminal is located close to the city centre, at 11 Oktyabrskoy Revolutsii street. Buses bound for Bratsk, Sayansk, and Ulan-Ude depart from here. The 3-star Delta Hotel stands two blocks away from Irkutsk bus terminal.
