Rezekne is one of the oldest towns not only in Latvia but also in Europe. Rezekne first was mentioned under the name of Rossiten in the document of Lubeck in 1285. At the present time Rezekne is a big transport junction at the crossing lines from Riga and St.Petersburg to Warsaw and Berlin. Rezekne is also a cultural, educational and industrial centre of East Latvia. The total area of Rezekne is 17,5 sq.km. With total population of 41,500. As the cultural centre, Rezekne is well-known for manufecturing traditional Latgalian ornamental pottery. The most cultural events in east Latvia take place in Rezekne.
