Yermak began his exploration of Siberia from Samara in the 16th century.
The city council has recently given this place its historical name – Barboshina glade
(its former name was Frunze glade, as it was also well-known for being the place where
the famous movie “Timur and his squad” had been shot).
The city has known the period of revolutions as well, which has been reflected in street names.

Kurumoch Airport is located 48 km away from Samara downtown. You may get to the city centre by train, by bus or by route taxi. Rapid electric trains “Samara – Kurumoch Airport – Samara” run four times a day from the airport to the city and back. The building of Samara railway terminal has become the tallest building in Europe after its reconstruction in 2001. It features an observation deck offering panoramic view of the Volga embankment. The terminal stands next to the Old Town – the historical centre of Samara. The Holiday Inn Samara Hotel is located next to Moskovskaya metro station within 5 minutes’ drive from the terminal.
The historical centre of Samara.
The historical centre of Samara includes stone merchant houses next to Revolution Square (former Alexeevskaya, after Saint Alexius, the holy patron of the city). Later on the city was built over along the Volga bank, and not around the centre.
