Saratov, a port on the Volga river, was founded as a fortress in 1590.
Saratov had long been a fish trade centre, which is reflected in the city’s coat of arms.
Before the Great Patriotic War Saratov was the home of the Volga Germans. The Roman Catholic St.Clement Cathedral is a reminder of Saratov’s German past. After the war Saratov was a “closed” city.
Today Saratov is one of Russia’s centres of higher education, and Saratov University is one of the oldest one in our country.
