Uralsk is located on the right bank of the Ural river where it flows into the Chagan river. In 1613 it was founded as a Cossacks strengthening - Yaitsky small town. In 1775 it was renamed into Uralsk and included in structure of the Astrakhan region. The modern city with a population of 157 thousand is a large economic and cultural centre of Kazakhstan. The main places of interest are the Historical Local Lore Museum and the Drama Theatre.
